2020: GOALS – REVISITED

So earlier this year I wrote a blog post about the goals I wanted to set myself for 2020. Since it’s December now and the year is almost over, I thought it would make sense to look back and reflect on the goals I had at the beginning of the year and see, if I achieved what I wanted to.

I: Geldmanagment // Get Better With Money Stuff

Must confess that I failed miserably at this. First of all I wanted to get a job and I didn’t. Although I applied for some jobs, it didn’t work out and I had a lot of anxiety about sending my resume and stuff. I think it is one of those situations where my anxiety disorder kinda manifests itself. But also I was scared to look for a job due to COVID and not a lot of local shops/companies seemed eager to find new employees.
Furthermore, I also impulse bought some stuff, spending more money than I planned or could afford to. So probably have to keep working on this whole mess in the coming year.

1. The Henna Wars – Adiba Jagirdar
2. Night Sky With Exit Wounds – Ocean Vuong
3. Homegoing – Yaa Gyasi
4. Everything Under – Daisy Johnson

I did it! Due to all the free time during Lockdown one and two, I was able to reach my reading goal before the end of November! Last year I had to rush myself on 31st of December to finish the book I was reading then in order to get to 52 books, but this year it was all smooth sailing. A good year for a book worm!
Those of you who are subscribed du my newsletter already know that I made myself a reading list for the remaining weeks of the year. It might be a bit ambitious, but I am planning to read the following books:
1. The Henna Wars – Adiba Jagirdar
2. Night Sky With Exit Wounds – Ocean Vuong
3. Homegoing – Yaa Gyasi
4. Everything Under – Daisy Johnson
… But even if I don’t manage to read them all by the end of the month, I won’t be mad about it because I’ve already reached my original goal.
I also set out to read more books by none-white authors and I also managed to do that quite successfully! At least 18 out of the 54 books were written by BI_PoC authors and there are more on the list above. I still want to increase this number next year though, so please send me your recommendations!

III: Producktivität & Kreativität // Be More Productive And Creative

This is a goal I achieved in part.
Firstly, I wanted to establish a writing routine, which I didn’t really managed to do. However, I am taking a creative writing class this semester and we are supposed to write three pages every day, right after we wake up, just to get in the habit of writing. I’ve been writing my morning pages for quite some time now and am planning on keeping it up after the seminar is done.
Secondly, I wanted to write and post one blog post every month and be a more active blogger, which I managed to do! I am quite proud of myself for doing this. It wasn’t easy at times, but looking back I hope I came up with interesting topics and entertaining and/or educational posts for your guys. I want to keep this up next year and am already working on a schedule.
Lastly I planned to finish some projects and start new ones. Which I did. Although the things I mentioned in my post from February are either done or have been neglected, I did accomplish some stuff writing wise! First of all, I published a magazine with my writing group in January. I also started to regularly submit my poetry to literary magazines and got a few poems published! Which means I am not a small-scale published author and that’s WILD.
Even though I planned to do a bigger writing project in 2020, that didn’t really work out. I did start working on a concept for a novel, but the only bigger thing I wrote this year was my BA and in my opinion that counts, too. Maybe next year when I am done with uni, I have more time to work on books, short stories and more poetry. Fingers crossed!

IV: Therapie // Therapy

My fourth goal for 2020 was doing regular therapy sessions and working on myself. And after all the paperwork was done and my insurance finally approved, I started weekly sessions back in May. Pretty quickly I realised that I won’t have a life changing revelation every session and that all of it is hard work. However, in retrospect I can definitely see that I made some progress. I won’t go into too much detail, because obviously this is rather personal, but I think I understand myself a little better these days, know what I have to keep working on and have started to understand my trigger points a bit better. I am interested to see what my therapy sessions in the new year will bring. But I am so happy with my therapist and forever thankful for her and that she helps me figure things out.

V: Pole Dance

This goal crashed and burned rather quickly, due to the pandemic. I did go to a first try out pole dance session in the beginning of March and LOVED it. Everything hurt and I had bruises all over my body, but I absolutely fell in love with the sports. But then two weeks later lockdown came and I had to set my new found passion aside.
I was forced to stick to my at home work out routine and also worked on my flexibility. I can finally reach my toes, but it’s slow progress. I thought it would work much faster that I could just jump into splits, lol. I also went for regular runs, especially in summer and autumn. Now it’s a bit cold and dark in the mornings, but I do occasionally still go out to run.
As soon as it is safe to do so, I want to get back to the pole though! Even if it kills me, haha.

This year put all of us to the test and looking back and reflecting on the goals I set for myself, it was full of ups and downs.
Ich hope that you guys have made it through this year okay and that you take care of yourselves and each other. Even though 2021 will be just as messy, I am hopeful that we will see some improvement. So – a happier new year to you all!
